The leisure complex Costa Martiánez or the Martiánez Lake, as it is popularly known, is a set of seaside pools, but it is also a garden and an outdoor sculpture museum. It’s a recreational space to enjoy the sun and water in a captivating environment with unique architecture, where art is breathed in every corner.
To better understand the morphology of the complex, it is most appropriate to divide it into three zones determined by their date of execution. Thus, the first and oldest would be the area of the San Telmo pools, adjacent at their western end to the hermitage of the same name. The second zone comprises the pools called Los Alisios, a set of three pools occupying the central part of the complex. Finally, covering an area of more than 30,000 m2, we find the area of the Lake, situated in the eastern part of the facilities.
The initial set of pools, built in the late 1950s, was not part of the Costa Martiánez project, and this was evident in their design. These pools lacked curves and adjacent spaces with little vegetation, where functionality of the facilities took precedence over aesthetics. In the early 2000s, renovation works were carried out to integrate this part of the complex with the rest of the facilities. As a result, the pools were rounded and the surroundings were adorned with vegetation in line with the overall project envisioned by César Manrique.
The second group of pools, consisting of three irregularly shaped rounded basins, is called Los Alisios. In this area, Manrique’s influence is clearly evident as he integrates the pools with natural elements such as basalt or subtropical flora. The largest of the pools houses a bar inside, accessed via platforms elevated above the water. A large jacuzzi completes this area of the complex.
The third and final zone to be built, and the most iconic of the pools, is The Lake, which has popularly given its name to the entire complex. It is a circular pool of approximately 15,000 m2 with 5 islands inside, 4 of them intended for sunbathing areas, while the largest, the central island, hosts gardens, a restaurant, and a party hall, the Andrómeda Hall, located below sea level.
Additionally, there are another 15,000 m2 dedicated to sunbathing areas, with gardens featuring endemic and subtropical plants. Throughout the complex, the dominant color is white, from the perimeters enclosing the area, contrasting with the volcanic-themed decorative elements.
On May 10, 2023, the grand Lake was closed to the public for a complete renovation of its machinery room, marking the first refurbishment of this scale undertaken at the Costa Martiánez Tourist Complex since its opening in 1977. These works lasted for 10 months, and the facility reopened its doors on Maundy Thursday, March 28, 2024.
Adjacent to this magnificent pool, there is another smaller one, primarily designed for children with shallower depths. Taking up a significant portion of this pool area stands a large sculpture that becomes an attraction for games among the little ones.
All the pools in the complex are supplied with seawater through a complex system of pumps, allowing the basins to be filled in record time. Additionally, for colder days, one of the pools in the complex is heated, enabling swimming every day of the year.
